Shared 3-Day Desert Tour from Marrakech

Your group boards a shared minibus, typically carrying between six and sixteen travellers from a genuine mix of nationalities, and departs Marrakech in the morning heading south toward the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n'Tichka Pass, the highest major mountain pass in North Africa at 2,260 metres, with sweeping views over terraced Berber villages along the way. The group stops at Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO-listed fortified ksar above the Ounila River and one of the best-preserved examples of pre-Saharan earthen architecture in the world, for a guided walk through its narrow lanes. After a group lunch stop in Ouarzazate, the 'Hollywood of Africa', we continue along the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs and through the Dades Valley toward Todra Gorge, stopping for a short group walk beneath its towering pink limestone cliffs, before pressing on to Merzouga as the afternoon light softens. Camel handlers meet the group on the edge of the Erg Chebbi dune sea for a shared sunset trek across the dunes to the group desert camp — a wonderful opportunity to bond with fellow travellers over the shared experience. After a group dinner cooked over an open fire, everyone gathers around the campfire as Berber musicians play traditional drums under one of the most spectacular starscapes anywhere on Earth. Lunch today is usually a shared group stop in Ouarzazate, a good chance to swap first impressions with fellow travellers before continuing to the dunes.

For those willing to wake before dawn, this morning offers the group a chance to climb a nearby dune together in the dark to watch the sunrise transform the desert from soft pink to deep gold, a genuinely bonding shared experience. Afterwards, the group enjoys a simple Berber breakfast at camp before saying goodbye to the camel guides and driving back to Merzouga village by 4x4, where the shared minibus awaits for the return journey. This is a long day of driving, retracing the route through Tinghir, the Dades Valley, and Ouarzazate, with regular stops for lunch and to stretch your legs. We cross the High Atlas once more via the Tizi n'Tichka Pass in the afternoon, arriving back in Marrakech in the early evening.
