Camel Ride and One Night in Merzouga Desert

Our driver will pick you up from your hotel or riad in Merzouga village in the late afternoon, timed so we reach the edge of the Erg Chebbi dune sea with good light remaining before sunset. Camel handlers are waiting with a string of dromedary camels, and after a brief, simple introduction to mounting and riding — comfortable and straightforward even for complete first-timers — we set off across the sand toward our simple desert camp, climbing gently rising dunes as the late-afternoon light deepens into warm gold and orange tones. After around thirty to forty-five minutes of trekking, we arrive at camp, a small cluster of traditional Berber-style tents offering a genuine, no-frills desert experience at an accessible price point, without sacrificing the essentials of a proper Sahara night. Watch the sunset from a nearby dune before a simple but satisfying traditional dinner, typically a tagine cooked over the camp fire, shared with fellow travellers in the communal tent. As night falls, with essentially no artificial light for many kilometres in any direction, the sky above Erg Chebbi reveals itself in a way that few people who haven't experienced a true desert night can fully imagine — a genuinely humbling blanket of stars, and on clear, moonless nights, the pale band of the Milky Way is often visible directly overhead. This is the essential Sahara experience distilled to its core: a camel trek into real dunes and one unforgettable night sleeping beneath the stars. Early risers may wish to climb a nearby dune before dawn to watch the sunrise, before a simple breakfast and the return camel trek to Merzouga village, where your driver will transfer you back to your accommodation by mid-morning.
