6-Day Fes to Desert Merzouga & Marrakech Tour

Today we will depart Fes early, ideally by 8am, for one of the longest and most spectacular driving days of the trip. The road climbs into the Middle Atlas, and within an hour the plains around Fes give way to pine and cedar forest. Our first stop is Ifrane, a curious alpine-style town built by the French in the 1930s with sloped red roofs that feel more Alpine than North African. From here we continue to the Azrou Cedar Forest, home to some of the largest and oldest Atlas cedars in the world, some estimated at over 800 years old, and a resident troop of wild Barbary macaques, one of the few primate species found outside Asia's and Africa's tropical regions — your driver stops here for twenty to thirty minutes so you can walk among the ancient trees. Continuing south, we descend toward Midelt, a former mining town and gateway to the High Atlas, where we typically stop for lunch. From Midelt, the road follows the dramatic Ziz Gorges and then the Ziz Valley, a ribbon of palm groves and mudbrick ksour villages winding through an otherwise barren, rocky landscape, with several photo stops at panoramic viewpoints. As the afternoon light softens, we arrive in Merzouga on the edge of the Erg Chebbi dune sea, where camel handlers meet us for a 45-60 minute sunset trek across the dunes to our exclusive desert camp. Enjoy a traditional dinner cooked over an open fire, and later, gather around the campfire as Berber musicians play traditional drums under one of the most spectacular starscapes anywhere on Earth.

For those willing to wake before dawn, this morning offers one of the most memorable experiences of the trip: climbing a nearby dune in the dark to watch the sunrise transform the desert from soft pink to deep gold. Afterwards, return to camp for a simple Berber breakfast before driving back to Merzouga village by 4x4, where your driver awaits. We drive west toward Todra Gorge, one of Morocco's most dramatic natural landmarks, where sheer pink and orange limestone cliffs rise up to 300 metres on either side of a narrow canyon in places barely 10 metres wide. We stop for an hour or so for a short walk along the canyon floor and photographs of the towering walls, a popular spot for rock climbers from around the world. Lunch is typically taken nearby, often on a terrace overlooking the palm oasis below. In the afternoon, we continue along the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs toward the Dades Valley, also known as the Valley of Roses, where dramatic folded rock formations rise above a green ribbon of almond and fig orchards dotted with earthen kasbahs. We check in to a traditional kasbah-style hotel with wonderful terrace views over the valley for a relaxed dinner as the sun sets.

After breakfast overlooking the Dades Valley, we head to Ouarzazate, nicknamed the 'Door of the Desert' and, more recently, the 'Hollywood of Africa' thanks to the Atlas Film Studios located here, where productions including Gladiator and Game of Thrones have been filmed. Depending on time and interest, we can stop at the studios or at the Taourirt Kasbah, a former residence of the powerful Glaoui family and one of the finest examples of traditional earthen architecture in the country. A short drive brings us to Ait Ben Haddou, a fortified ksar above the Ounila River and UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987, dating to the 17th century and one of the best-preserved examples of pre-Saharan earthen architecture in the world — its dramatic silhouette has appeared in films including Lawrence of Arabia and Gladiator. We take a guided walk through the ksar's narrow lanes to the old communal granary at the top for panoramic views over the valley, one of the most photographed sites in Morocco. We overnight nearby, ahead of tomorrow's crossing of the High Atlas. Lunch is usually taken with sweeping views over the Ait Ben Haddou valley, a memorable midday stop between the desert and the mountains.

This morning our driver begins the spectacular ascent of the Tizi n'Tichka Pass, the highest major mountain pass in North Africa at 2,260 metres, winding through the High Atlas via a long series of switchbacks with sweeping views over terraced Berber villages, almond groves, and colourful mineral-rich rock formations — roadside stalls sell local geodes and amethyst, a specialty of this region. As the road finally descends the western side of the Atlas, the terrain flattens out and the palm groves surrounding Marrakech come into view. We arrive in the late afternoon and check in to your riad in the heart of the medina, with the evening free to rest after a long but unforgettable drive, or to take an early stroll toward Jemaa el-Fna square to get a first taste of Marrakech's famous evening energy. The Tizi n'Tichka Pass drive is a genuine highlight in its own right, and your driver will stop wherever the light or view is best for photographs.

This morning our driver hands you to a local guide for a full day exploring the 'Red City', beginning at the Bahia Palace, a 19th-century masterpiece with elaborately carved cedar ceilings and tranquil courtyards, followed by the Saadian Tombs, a royal necropolis rediscovered in 1917 after lying sealed for nearly 300 years, renowned for its Italian Carrara marble and gold-leaf detailing. We view the Koutoubia Mosque, Marrakech's largest landmark, from its surrounding gardens. Around midday, we visit the Jardin Majorelle, a stunning botanical garden created by French painter Jacques Majorelle in the 1920s and later restored by Yves Saint Laurent, celebrated for its cobalt-blue buildings and exotic plants. In the afternoon, we head into the souks, Marrakech's sprawling market network organised by trade, where your guide helps with the art of bargaining. As afternoon draws to a close, we make our way to Jemaa el-Fna, a UNESCO-recognised 'Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity', which transforms after sunset with food stalls, storytellers, and musicians — an excellent, lively spot for dinner. Lunch during the guided Marrakech tour is typically at a traditional restaurant near the souks, a welcome pause before the afternoon's continued exploration.

Our journey together comes to an end this morning. Depending on your flight time, you will have a final opportunity to enjoy breakfast on your riad's rooftop terrace, take a last unhurried walk through the medina, or pick up any remaining gifts — argan oil, saffron, ras el hanout spice blends, or handmade leather goods make excellent, easily packable souvenirs. If your schedule allows, your driver can suggest a final stop, such as the Menara Gardens on the western edge of the city, a peaceful 12th-century olive grove and reflecting pool with the snow-capped High Atlas Mountains as a backdrop.
